No matter how disgusted the vast majority of us are with Trump’s intransigent ignorance and assholeness, those of us in positions of political knowledge and influence must keep reminding a largely disgusted electorate that while there are rational political explanations for the Trump phenomenon, it is, in the words of one of my esteemed former political science professors, not normal.
Donald Trump’s candidacy is the result of 40 years of expanding fractures within the GOP. Party operatives clearly understand that, evidenced by their brutally honest 2012 election post mortem, and they’ll either start heeding their own analyses, or continue to put their national elections at risk and eventually be replaced by a party that rejects the extremist positions.
Trump’s only hope is electorate complacency. It is important to not let disgust or disillusion make us abandon the process. I understand there are a significant portion of the electorate who have bought the anti-Clinton propaganda, but the fact is if every eligible voter were to cast a ballot, Trump and his dangerous rhetoric would be handily sent packing.
It’s everyone’s responsibility to badger everyone you know to a) register in time and b) make sure to cast a ballot. No excuses.
And yes, that means you have to watch the next debate. :)
